Three Different Seas: East, West, and South

Korea is wrapped by three seas so different they might as well be three different oceans.

Look at a map of Korea and you will see water on three sides. But Koreans never say just "the sea" — they say East Sea, West Sea, or South Sea, because the three are astonishingly different. The East Sea plunges to an average depth of about 1,750 meters. It is deep, cold, and clear, with long sandy beaches, dramatic sunrises, and tides so small you barely notice them. The West Sea (Yellow Sea) is the opposite: a shallow shelf sea averaging only about 44 meters deep, with some of the largest tidal ranges on Earth — at Incheon the water level can swing more than 9 meters, and at low tide the sea retreats to expose kilometers of mudflats. The South Sea is a drowned, jagged coastline scattered with thousands of islands, calm and warm enough for large-scale seafood farming. Geology explains it: the east coast drops off a steep slope, the west sits on a continental shelf shared with China, and the south is a sunken river-valley (ria) coast. The differences shape daily life — raw fish and squid towns on the east, clam digging and tidal-flat cuisine on the west, island-hopping and oyster farms on the south. Pick a coast, and you pick a completely different Korea.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. East Sea: express bus Seoul–Sokcho about 2.5h. West Sea: Seoul subway/AREX to the Incheon Airport area, then a local bus (e.g., Muui 1) or car across the Muui Bridge (opened 2019) directly onto Muuido — no ferry needed. South Sea: express bus Seoul–Tongyeong about 4h, or KTX to Yeosu-Expo about 3h.

Tips. On the west coast, always check tide tables before walking on mudflats — at low tide the sea is kilometers away, and the incoming tide moves fast. East Sea water stays cold and wavy even in summer; swim only in designated beach zones.

Best time. July–August for swimming; spring and autumn for coastal walks; check low-tide windows for the mudflats.
