Korea's autumn colors arrive on a schedule — starting high in the north and sliding south for a month.
Korean autumn is not a single week. It is a wave. Cold air arrives first in the northeast highlands, so the leaves turn there first, then the color line moves south and downhill across the peninsula over roughly a month.
The Korea Meteorological Administration actually measures this. A mountain is declared to have its 'first foliage' when about 20% of it, counting down from the summit, has changed color, and to be at 'peak foliage' when about 80% has — usually around twenty days after the start. KMA tracks this on 21 major mountains, from Seoraksan in the northeast to Jirisan and Mudeungsan in the south.
In a typical year Seoraksan begins turning around the end of September and peaks in the second half of October; central Korea, including Seoul's Bukhansan, peaks from late October into early November; Jirisan and the southern parks run to mid-November. Roughly a month separates Seoraksan from the far southern mountains.
That lag is a gift to travelers. If you miss the peak in one region, you can simply follow the wave south the following week. It also explains a very Korean autumn ritual: checking the foliage forecast the way other countries check the surf report.
한국의 가을은 한 주로 끝나지 않는다. 물결처럼 내려온다. 찬 공기가 북동쪽 고산지대에 먼저 닿기 때문에 그곳부터 잎이 물들고, 이후 한 달 남짓에 걸쳐 단풍선이 남쪽으로, 산 아래로 이동한다.
기상청은 이를 실제로 관측한다. 산 정상부터 약 20%가 물들면 '첫 단풍', 약 80%가 물들면 '단풍 절정'으로 본다. 절정은 보통 첫 단풍에서 20일쯤 뒤에 온다. 기상청은 설악산부터 지리산·무등산까지 전국 21개 주요 산의 단풍을 관측한다.
평년 기준으로 설악산은 9월 말에 물들기 시작해 10월 하순에 절정에 이르고, 북한산을 포함한 중부지방은 10월 말에서 11월 초, 지리산과 남부지방은 11월 중순까지 이어진다. 설악산과 남쪽 끝 산의 시차가 약 한 달이다.
이 시차는 여행자에게 오히려 기회다. 한 지역의 절정을 놓쳤다면 다음 주에 남쪽으로 따라 내려가면 된다. 그래서 한국인은 가을마다 단풍 예보를 확인한다. 다른 나라에서 파도 예보를 보듯이.

Getting there.가는 법. Seoraksan: express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Sokcho (about 2.5 hours), then local bus 7 or 7-1 to Seorak-dong park entrance. Naejangsan: KTX from Yongsan to Jeongeup (about 1h40m), then a local bus (about 30 min) to the park. Jirisan Piagol: KTX to Gurye-gu Station, then local bus toward Piagol. Bukhansan: Seoul Subway Line 3 to Gupabal, then bus 704 — a half-day option with no overnight needed.
Tips.팁. Peak weekends are genuinely crowded: buses from Seoul, park shuttle lines and the Seoraksan cable car all sell out, so travel on a weekday and start before 9 a.m. if you can. Mountain temperatures run well below the city forecast and drop fast after 4 p.m., so bring a windproof layer even on a mild day. Some Korean national park trails have seasonal closures or reservation systems — check the Korea National Park Service site before planning a long ridge hike. Stay on marked trails; the mountains are steep granite and rescue calls spike every autumn.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. Mid-to-late October in the northeast and central mountains; late October to mid-November in the south and at lower elevations.
