For about a month every summer, a stalled rain front dumps a third or more of Korea's yearly rainfall — meet jangma.
Every year from late June to late July, Korea enters jangma — the East Asian summer monsoon rainy season. A stationary front forms where cold northern air and hot, humid Pacific air collide, and it stalls over the peninsula for weeks, sliding north and south and unloading bands of heavy rain. According to Korea Meteorological Administration normals, jangma typically begins around June 19 on Jeju Island, June 23 in the southern provinces, and June 25 in the central region including Seoul, lasting roughly a month. In that single stretch, Korea receives a large share — commonly cited as 30 to 50 percent — of its entire annual rainfall.
Jangma is not constant drizzle. It alternates between torrential downpours, muggy gray lulls, and sudden sunny breaks, which makes it hard to plan around. Koreans adapt with a whole seasonal toolkit: dehumidifiers hum in every apartment, laundry moves indoors, convenience stores stack umbrellas by the door, and weather apps get checked like stock tickers.
For travelers, jangma is manageable if you know it exists. Trains run normally, museums and cafes fill up, and the rain-washed palaces can be beautifully moody. Just avoid riverside camping and valley hiking during heavy-rain warnings — flash flooding is the real danger of the season, and Korea's emergency text alerts take it seriously.

If your phone blares a loud Korean emergency alert during heavy rain, it is a flood/landslide advisory — avoid streams, valleys, and underpasses that day.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. If you want to see jangma culture (and lower hotel prices), late June to mid-July; if you want to avoid it, come before mid-June or after early August.
