King Sejong and the Invention of Hangul
Hangul is one of the only alphabets on Earth whose inventor, birth year, and design logic are all on record — a king made it so his people could read.
The statue of a seated king holding a book dominates Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square. That is Sejong the Great (r. 1418-1450), the fourth Joseon king, and the book represents his most radical project: a brand-new alphabet.
In 15th-century Korea, writing meant classical Chinese characters — thousands of them, requiring years of study only elites could afford. Sejong concluded that ordinary people were suffering because they could not express themselves in writing. The alphabet was completed in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 through a document called Hunminjeongeum, 'The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People.' Its companion commentary explains the design: consonant letters model the shape of the mouth and tongue when making each sound, and vowels combine symbols for heaven, earth, and human. Because the creator, date, and principles are all documented, UNESCO added the Hunminjeongeum manuscript to its Memory of the World Register in 1997.
Today Hangul is used by everyone in Korea, and October 9 — Hangeul Day — is a national holiday. For visitors, it is also a gift: the alphabet is famously quick to learn, and many travelers pick up basic reading in a few days, enough to sound out subway stops and menus. Few writing systems reward a weekend of effort so generously.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. Gwanghwamun Square: Subway Line 5 to Gwanghwamun Station, Exit 2 — the statue is right there, and the free underground exhibition hall is entered from behind it. Yeongneung in Yeoju: intercity bus from Seoul (Dong Seoul or Express Bus Terminal) to Yeoju, then local bus or taxi.
Tips. The Story of King Sejong hall is free with English panels — a compact 40-minute visit that pairs perfectly with Gyeongbokgung next door. Note the National Hangeul Museum in Yongsan is closed for fire-damage reconstruction until October 2028, so don't route a trip around it. If you visit around October 9 (Hangeul Day), Gwanghwamun hosts related events.
Best time. Any season; early October adds Hangeul Day events around Gwanghwamun.
