Why Most Korean Hot Springs Aren't Volcanic

No volcanoes needed: Korea's hot springs are ancient groundwater warmed deep inside granite — a quieter cousin of Japan's onsen.

Visitors who love Japanese onsen often expect the same in Korea — steaming sulfurous pools beside volcanoes. But South Korea's mainland has no volcanoes, and geological studies classify South Korea's geothermal waters as non-volcanic in origin: rain and groundwater that seeped deep underground over long ages, was warmed by the Earth's natural heat within granite and gneiss bedrock, and rises back up along faults. That is why Korean hot springs are typically clear, mild, and alkaline rather than milky and sulfur-scented.

The tradition is still old and royal. Onyang Hot Springs in Asan, documented for about 600 years, is considered Korea's oldest spa town — Joseon kings including Sejong the Great traveled there to treat ailments. Bugok in Changnyeong boasts the country's hottest source at around 78°C, and Suanbo in Chungju grew into a classic inland spa resort. Since the Hot Spring Act of 1981, Korea has legally defined a hot spring as water naturally emerging at 25°C or above, which allowed many moderately warm sources to register and develop.

Today the experience is distinctly Korean: gender-separated bathhouses attached to hotels, family-friendly spa parks, and jjimjilbang culture layered on top. The water may be gentler than Japan's, but soaking in a 600-year-old royal spa town — reachable by Seoul's subway network — is its own kind of pleasure.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. Onyang: ride Seoul Metro Line 1 all the way to Onyangoncheon Station (about 2h from central Seoul) — the spa district is right outside. Suanbo: intercity bus to Chungju, then local bus to Suanbo. Bugok: bus or train to Changnyeong/Bugok via Daegu or Busan. Spa Land: Busan Metro Line 2 to Centum City Station.

Tips. Korean bathhouses are nude and strictly gender-separated — swimsuits are not worn in the hot pools (Spa Land's shared jjimjilbang zones use provided clothing). Always shower thoroughly before entering the tubs. Small towels are sold or rented at the entrance; a soak typically costs just 8,000–15,000 won at public spa houses.

Best time. Late autumn through winter (November–February), when a hot soak after cold air feels best and spa towns are at their liveliest.
