Baengno — literally "white dew" — is the fifteenth of Korea's 24 solar terms, falling around September 7. Korea is often described as a lunar-calendar country, but the solar terms are exactly what the name says: a solar calendar that divides the sun's path through the sky into 15-degree segments, giving farmers a reliable guide to the seasons. Baengno marks the moment early autumn becomes visible. Morning temperatures begin dipping below the dew point, so at dawn the grass and ripening rice stalks are beaded with dew that gleams white in the low light — hence the name. It sits between Cheoseo, the "end of the heat" in late August, and Chubun, the autumn equinox. For farmers this window mattered enormously: rice needed steady sun now to finish ripening before harvest. Old almanacs also mark it as the time wild geese arrive from the north while swallows leave for the south. Few Koreans farm by the solar terms today, but Baengno still describes something everyone feels — the sticky monsoon heat finally breaks, mornings turn crisp, and the light sharpens. If you are in Korea in early September and suddenly need a light jacket at sunrise, you have just experienced Baengno.
백로(白露)는 24절기 가운데 열다섯 번째 절기로, 양력 9월 7일 무렵이다. 한국은 흔히 음력의 나라로 알려져 있지만, 절기는 이름 그대로 태양의 길을 15도 간격으로 나눈 순수한 태양력이다. 계절을 정확히 읽어야 했던 농부들의 달력이었던 셈이다. 백로는 초가을이 눈에 보이기 시작하는 시점이다. 이 무렵 아침 기온이 이슬점 아래로 내려가면서 새벽 풀잎과 여물어가는 벼 이삭에 이슬이 하얗게 맺힌다 — '흰 이슬'이라는 이름이 여기서 왔다. 더위가 물러간다는 처서(8월 말)와 낮밤의 길이가 같아지는 추분(9월 말) 사이에 자리한다. 농부들에게 이 보름은 대단히 중요했다. 수확 전 벼가 마지막으로 여무는 데 꾸준한 햇살이 필요한 시기였기 때문이다. 옛 달력은 이때 기러기가 북쪽에서 날아오고 제비가 남쪽으로 떠난다고 적었다. 오늘날 절기에 맞춰 농사짓는 사람은 드물지만, 백로가 가리키는 변화는 누구나 몸으로 느낀다. 끈끈하던 여름 더위가 마침내 꺾이고, 아침 공기가 서늘해지고, 햇살이 맑아진다. 9월 초 한국에서 새벽에 문득 겉옷이 필요해졌다면, 그것이 바로 백로다.

Getting there.가는 법. Dumulmeori: Gyeongui-Jungang subway line to Yangsu Station (about 1h from central Seoul), then a 15-minute walk. Gimje Byeokgolje: KTX or Saemaeul train to Gimje Station, then a short taxi or local bus ride.
Tips.팁. Go at dawn — the dew and river mist at Dumulmeori burn off within an hour or two of sunrise, so this is one Korean sight that genuinely rewards early risers. Bring a light layer; early-September mornings turn cool even when afternoons are still hot. If you visit Gimje a few weeks later, check dates for the Gimje Horizon Festival held around the Byeokgolje rice plains in early autumn.
