'Clear and bright' — the early-April term when Korea tills its fields, plants its trees, and trusts the sky again.
Cheongmyeong, falling around April 4–5, is the solar term whose name means exactly what the season delivers: 'clear and bright.' After the dust and moodiness of early spring, the sky is said to finally settle, and for centuries this was the signal to begin farming in earnest — tilling rice paddies and dry fields in preparation for planting. Clear weather on Cheongmyeong was read as a good omen for the harvest year.
The term travels with a companion. Hansik, the cold-food day, falls on the same day or the day after, which produced a famously fatalistic Korean proverb: 'Die on Cheongmyeong or die on Hansik' — meaning the difference is negligible. The two dates blur into one early-April moment of field work and ancestral grave visits.
Cheongmyeong's most visible modern legacy is trees. South Korea's Arbor Day (Sikmogil) falls on April 5, overlapping with the term, and the timing is deliberate — early April is considered ideal planting weather. The holiday powered the reforestation campaigns that turned Korea's famously bare postwar hills green within a generation. It is no longer a day off work, but schools, companies, and local governments still plant on it. If Korea's mountainsides look improbably lush to you, Cheongmyeong season is partly why.
4월 4~5일 무렵의 청명(淸明)은 이름이 곧 계절이다 — '하늘이 맑고 밝다.' 변덕스럽던 초봄이 지나고 하늘이 안정되는 이때가, 수백 년간 본격적인 농사의 신호였다. 논밭을 갈아 파종을 준비했고, 청명에 날이 맑으면 그해 농사가 잘된다고 믿었다.
청명에게는 짝이 있다. 불을 쓰지 않는 날인 한식이 같은 날이거나 바로 다음 날에 온다. 그래서 '청명에 죽으나 한식에 죽으나'라는 속담이 생겼다 — 하루 차이니 그게 그거라는 뜻이다. 두 날은 밭일과 성묘가 겹치는 4월 초의 한 시절로 함께 기억된다.
청명이 현대에 남긴 가장 뚜렷한 유산은 나무다. 한국의 식목일(4월 5일)은 청명과 겹치는데, 이는 우연이 아니라 4월 초가 나무 심기에 가장 알맞은 날씨이기 때문이다. 식목일은 전후 벌거숭이였던 한국의 산을 한 세대 만에 푸르게 바꾼 조림 운동의 동력이었다. 지금은 공휴일이 아니지만 학교와 기업, 지자체는 여전히 이날 나무를 심는다. 한국의 산이 이상할 만큼 울창해 보인다면, 그 이유의 일부가 청명의 계절에 있다.

Korea National Arboretum: bus 21 from Uijeongbu Station (Line 1) or by car — it sits in the Gwangneung Forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, about 1.5h from central Seoul.
Tips.팁. The National Arboretum requires advance online reservation and closes early in the week — check the official site before going. Early April in Seoul also means cherry blossoms, so parks are at their best (and busiest) right at Cheongmyeong.
