Once a year, magpies build a bridge across the Milky Way so two lovers can meet — and if it rains, those are their tears.
Chilseok falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month — usually in August — and carries one of East Asia's most beloved legends. Jiknyeo, a weaver, and Gyeonwu, a cowherd, fell so deeply in love that they neglected their work, and the Heavenly King separated them on opposite sides of the Milky Way. Moved by their sorrow, the magpies and crows of the world fly up once a year to form a living bridge, the Ojakgyo, so the two can meet for a single night. Rain on Chilseok is said to be their tears — of joy on the night they meet, of parting the morning after. The story came to Korea from China's Qixi festival (Japan celebrates it as Tanabata) and took root deeply: Koreans traditionally ate wheat noodles and wheat pancakes on this day, calling it the last chance to enjoy wheat before the season turned. Chilseok is not a public holiday today, and it is quieter than Valentine's Day, but the legend is one every Korean grows up knowing — it appears in dramas, songs, and school textbooks. When summer rain falls in early August, someone will still say, half smiling, that Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo must be crying again.
