Chubun: The Autumn Equinox

The day light and dark break even — and Korea starts drying its harvest in the autumn sun.

Chubun is the autumn equinox, the sixteenth solar term, falling around September 22–23, when day and night are exactly the same length. From this point on, nights grow longer than days — the traditional tipping point into real autumn, midway between Baengno ("white dew") and Hallo ("cold dew"). In farming villages this was the busy edge of harvest season: sweet potatoes were dug, chilies picked, and vegetables spread out to dry in the clear, low-humidity autumn sun — which is why you still see red peppers drying on rooftops and roadsides in the Korean countryside at this time of year. The day's weather was read like a forecast: a dry wind on Chubun was taken as a sign of a good harvest. The Joseon royal court gave the equinox a more poetic role. Chubun was the day of noinseongje, a ceremony in which the king prayed to the "star of old age" for the longevity of his people. Today Chubun passes without a holiday, but its timing shapes the travel calendar: cosmos and pink muhly grass come into bloom, the Chuseok holiday usually lands nearby, and the fierce summer light softens into the golden clarity Koreans consider the best weather of the year — cheongo mabi, "high skies and fattening horses."

If you go가신다면

Getting there. Gyeongju: KTX to Singyeongju Station (about 2h from Seoul), then bus 700-series or a 20-minute taxi to the historic center — Cheomseongdae is a short walk from Daereungwon. National Folk Museum: Anguk Station (Line 3), inside the Gyeongbokgung Palace grounds.

Tips. Around the equinox, the fields beside Cheomseongdae — a 7th-century star-observation tower, fittingly — bloom with cosmos and pink muhly; visit near sunset, as the monument is lit after dark. The National Folk Museum's exhibits on the farming year put all 24 solar terms in context, and admission is free. If your trip overlaps Chuseok, expect major sights to be crowded and some restaurants closed on the holiday itself.

Best time. Late September
