NadeGogu: Spring Rain and First Tea곡우 — 봄비와 첫 녹차
The 'grain rain' of late April sets Korea's rice clocks ticking — and gives its most prized green tea a name.
Gogu, around April 20, is the last solar term of spring. The name means 'grain rain' — the gentle, steady rains of late April that were believed to soak and wake the hundred grains. For rice farmers this was a pivotal moment: the time to soak seed rice and ready the nurseries, because the whole transplanting season downstream depended on it.
But Gogu's most delicious legacy belongs to tea. Korean green tea is graded by picking time, and the highest grade, ujeon — literally 'before the rain' — is made only from tender young buds hand-plucked before Gogu. These first-flush leaves are tiny, scarce, and prized for their soft, sweet, almost broth-like flavor; ujeon commands the highest prices of any Korean tea. The main growing regions are in the warm south: Boseong, with its sculpted emerald hillsides, and Hadong, at the foot of Jirisan, where tradition holds that Korea's first tea was planted with seeds brought from Tang China in 828, during the Silla era.
Visit in the weeks around Gogu and you can watch pickers moving through the rows by hand. A few weeks later, in early May, both Boseong and Hadong throw their tea festivals — the moment when Korea's quietest luxury briefly becomes a public celebration.
4월 20일 무렵의 곡우(穀雨)는 봄의 마지막 절기다. '곡식을 적시는 비'라는 이름처럼, 늦은 4월의 부드럽고 꾸준한 비가 온갖 곡식을 깨운다고 믿었다. 벼농사꾼에게는 결정적인 시기였다 — 볍씨를 물에 담그고 못자리를 준비하는 때로, 이후 모내기 농사 전체가 여기에 달려 있었다.
그러나 곡우가 남긴 가장 맛있는 유산은 차다. 한국 녹차는 찻잎을 딴 시기로 등급이 나뉘는데, 최고 등급인 우전(雨前)은 말 그대로 '비 이전' — 곡우 전에 손으로 딴 여린 첫 새싹으로만 만든다. 첫물 찻잎은 작고 귀하며, 부드럽고 단맛이 도는 깊은 맛으로 한국 차 중 가장 비싼 값에 팔린다. 주산지는 따뜻한 남쪽이다. 초록 언덕이 물결치는 보성, 그리고 지리산 자락의 하동 — 하동에는 신라 시대인 828년 당나라에서 가져온 차 씨앗을 처음 심었다는 유래가 전해진다.

Hadong: intercity bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal, or KTX to Jinju then local bus toward Hwagae/Ssanggyesa.
Tips.팁. Ujeon is scarce and sells out quickly — buy at the source in late April if you want the real first flush. The tea festivals fall on the early-May holiday cluster, so book accommodation well ahead. Wear proper shoes: the photogenic Boseong rows climb a genuinely steep hillside.
