NadeHaji: The Summer Solstice하지 — 일 년 중 낮이 가장 긴 날
On Korea's longest day, farmers once prayed for rain — and everyone else dug up the year's sweetest potatoes.
Haji, around June 21, is the tenth of the 24 solar terms and marks the summer solstice — the longest day and shortest night of the year. The character 'ji' means 'extreme': the summit of summer. From here, daylight slowly shrinks while heat keeps building toward the dog days of August.
For traditional farmers, Haji was a deadline written in water. Rice transplanted in early June needs flooded paddies, which need the summer monsoon. If the rains had not arrived by Haji, villages performed giuje — solemn rituals praying for rain — because a dry solstice threatened the whole year's crop. The term was also a to-do list: sow buckwheat, weed the chili fields, and harvest garlic, barley, and potatoes.
That last item became a small piece of food culture. 'Haji potatoes' — spring-planted potatoes that mature in roughly 80 to 100 days, ready right around the solstice — are prized for their taste, especially from mountainous Gangwon Province, where potatoes long served as a staple crop in terrain too steep for rice. Today the giuje rituals are history, but the potato calendar lives on: early summer brings Gangwon's haji potatoes to markets, and Chuncheon's famous potato-shaped bread has turned the humble Gangwon spud into a nationwide dessert pilgrimage.
하지는 양력 6월 21일 무렵, 24절기 중 열 번째 절기이자 일 년 중 낮이 가장 길고 밤이 가장 짧은 날이다. '지(至)'는 '끝까지 이르다'는 뜻 — 여름의 정점이라는 의미다. 이날을 기점으로 낮은 조금씩 짧아지지만, 더위는 오히려 8월 삼복을 향해 차오른다.
전통 농가에게 하지는 물로 쓰인 마감일이었다. 6월 초 모내기를 마친 논에는 물이 차 있어야 하고, 그 물은 여름 장마가 채워 준다. 하지가 지나도록 비가 오지 않으면 마을은 '기우제'를 지냈다. 마른 하지는 한 해 농사 전체를 위협했기 때문이다. 하지 무렵은 할 일 목록이기도 했다. 메밀을 파종하고, 고추밭을 매고, 마늘과 보리, 그리고 감자를 캐는 때다.
마지막 항목은 작은 음식 문화가 됐다. 봄에 심어 80~100일 만에 하지 무렵 여무는 '하지감자'는 유난히 맛이 좋기로 꼽히는데, 특히 벼농사가 어려운 산악 지형 탓에 감자를 주식처럼 길러 온 강원도 감자가 유명하다. 기우제는 역사가 됐지만 감자 달력은 살아 있다. 초여름이면 강원도 하지감자가 시장에 깔리고, 춘천의 감자 모양 빵은 이 소박한 작물을 전국구 디저트 순례지로 만들었다.

Getting there.가는 법. Chuncheon: ITX-Cheongchun train from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni Station (about 70-80 minutes) to Chuncheon Station, then local bus 11/12 or a taxi to Cafe Gamzabatt in Sinbuk-eup. The National Folk Museum is a 10-min walk from Anguk Station (Line 3) in Seoul.
Tips.팁. The potato bread sells out on weekend afternoons — go before lunch or buy a boxed set early. Pair the trip with Chuncheon's other signature food, dakgalbi. In early summer, look for 'haji gamja' labels at traditional markets; the small new potatoes are best simply steamed.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. Late June to July, when haji potatoes hit the markets right after the solstice; Chuncheon itself is pleasant year-round.
