Hanro & Sanggang: Frost and Foliage
Cold dew, then first frost — the two solar terms that paint Korea's mountains red.
October belongs to two solar terms. Hanro, "cold dew," arrives around October 8: the dew of early autumn now feels icy, humidity drops, and nights lengthen noticeably. Sanggang, "frost descends," follows around October 23 as the final solar term of autumn — the point when the first frost whitens fields and winter waits at the door. Between these two dates, Korea's most spectacular natural event unfolds: the autumn foliage front. Because cold arrives from the north and from altitude, the mountains turn first — Seoraksan in the northeast usually peaks around mid-October — and the wave of red and gold rolls south for weeks, reaching southern parks like Naejangsan in late October and early November. Traditional life followed the chill too. This was the season for chrysanthemum wine and chrysanthemum pancakes (gukhwajeon), made when the flowers bloomed, and for chueotang — a rich loach soup eaten to build strength before winter, since the fish were at their fattest as they burrowed down for the cold. Today Hanro and Sanggang mean one thing above all: hiking season at its absolute peak. The weather forecast service publishes foliage-timing maps each fall, and on fine October weekends, half of Korea seems to be on a mountain trail.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. Seoraksan: express bus from Seoul to Sokcho (about 2.5h), then local bus 7 or 7-1 to the Seorak-dong park entrance. Naejangsan: KTX/SRT to Jeongeup (about 1.5-2h from Seoul), then a local bus or taxi to the park entrance.
Tips. The foliage moves north to south — Seoraksan usually peaks around mid-October and Naejangsan in late October to early November, so check the annual foliage forecast before booking. Weekends at both parks are extremely crowded; go on a weekday and start early, and book Sokcho or Jeongeup accommodation well ahead in peak weeks. Order chueotang, the traditional dish of this exact season — Namwon is Korea's most famous town for it.
Best time. Mid-October to early November
