Korea's 'Great Cold' is often milder than its 'Small Cold' — a naming paradox Koreans turned into a proverb.
The last two of Korea's 24 solar terms are Sohan ('small cold,' around January 5–6) and Daehan ('great cold,' around January 20). By name, Daehan should be the harsher one. In practice, Koreans joke the opposite: a famous proverb says 'Daehan went to visit Sohan's house and froze to death.'
Why the mismatch? The solar-term names were coined centuries ago for the climate of northern China, where late January is coldest. On the Korean peninsula, the Siberian high-pressure system often expands most fiercely in early January, bringing the sharpest wind and steepest temperature drops right around Sohan. Korea Meteorological Administration records show Sohan tends to be the colder of the two — though it is a close race; one 30-year Seoul comparison came out an even 15:15 tie.
Either way, early-to-mid January is the heart of Korean winter, and Koreans lean into it. Rivers in the northern county of Hwacheon freeze solid enough to host a giant ice-fishing festival, mountain parks turn white, and steamy jjimjilbang bathhouses fill up. If you visit during Sohan and Daehan, pack real winter layers — then go enjoy what the cold makes possible.
24절기의 마지막 두 절기는 소한(1월 5~6일경, '작은 추위')과 대한(1월 20일경, '큰 추위')이다. 이름대로라면 대한이 더 추워야 하지만, 한국에는 정반대의 속담이 있다. '대한이 소한 집에 놀러 갔다가 얼어 죽는다.'
왜 이런 역설이 생겼을까. 절기 이름은 수백 년 전 중국 화북 지방 기후를 기준으로 지어졌는데, 그곳은 1월 하순이 가장 춥다. 반면 한반도는 시베리아 대륙 고기압이 1월 초순에 가장 크게 확장하면서 바람이 세지고 기온이 급강하하는 경향이 있어, 소한 무렵이 한겨울의 정점이 되곤 한다. 기상청 관측으로도 소한이 더 추운 경향을 보인다 — 다만 박빙이라, 최근 30년 서울 기온 비교에서는 15대 15 무승부가 나오기도 했다.

Tips.팁. For the ice festival, dress in waterproof boots and thick gloves — you will be standing on river ice for hours; fishing gear can be rented on site and weekends sell out, so go on a weekday morning if you can. Check the festival's official notices, as warm spells can shorten the ice-fishing period. At a jjimjilbang, bathing areas are nude and gender-separated; the common sauna halls are mixed and clothed in the uniform provided.
