Soseo & Daeseo: Peak of Summer Heat
Two ancient calendar terms warn you exactly when Korea turns into a sauna.
Soseo ('minor heat') and Daeseo ('major heat') are the 11th and 12th of Korea's 24 solar terms, falling around July 7 and July 22–23. Unlike the lunar holidays, solar terms track the sun's position, so their dates barely move — and they are strikingly accurate weather forecasts written centuries ago. Soseo announces that the truly oppressive heat is beginning; Daeseo marks what tradition calls the hottest stretch of the year. What makes this period especially intense is the overlap: the jangma monsoon rains often continue into it, so ferocious heat and high humidity arrive together, sometimes with heavy downpours. Farmers of old timed their work around these terms — this was when summer crops ripened and when people sought out cooling foods and shade. Modern Korea handles the same season with new tools: heat-wave alerts push to every phone, offices run cold, and the summer food culture is at full strength — kongguksu (noodles in chilled soybean broth), naengmyeon, and mountains of bingsu shaved ice. Fruit stalls overflow with watermelon and Korean melon. If you visit in July, you are traveling through Soseo and Daeseo whether you know it or not — knowing the names helps you understand why everyone moves slowly, eats cold noodles, and checks the sky.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. Cheonggyecheon: Subway Line 5 to Gwanghwamun Station or Line 1 to Jonggak Station. Gwangjang Market: Line 1 to Jongno 5-ga. Juknokwon: KTX or express bus to Gwangju, then a local bus from U-Square Terminal to Damyang (about 40 minutes).
Tips. Do as locals do: order kongguksu (cold soybean-broth noodles) or patbingsu on the hottest days, and plan outdoor sightseeing for morning and evening. Jangma downpours can hit suddenly — carry a compact umbrella, and check the weather app's heat-wave (pokyeom) alerts.
Best time. Early to late July — this topic is literally about surviving that window well
