Two solar terms named for snow — and why the real blizzards come later.
The last stretch of the solar-term year is named for snow. Soseol, "minor snow," arrives around November 22, when the first flakes of the season were traditionally expected and average temperatures were said to slip below 5°C. Daeseol, "major snow," follows around December 7, supposedly the time of the year's biggest snowfall. Here is the charming twist: on the Korean Peninsula it seldom actually snows much on Daeseol itself. The names were inherited from an old East Asian calendar, and Korea's genuinely heavy snow tends to arrive later, in deep winter — which is why the country's snow festivals, like the one on Taebaeksan, run in late January. What the old calendar got right is the feeling: by Soseol the wind bites, and by Daeseol the year is visibly closing. Farmers wanted the cold, too. A proverb says the chill of Soseol "should be bought even if you must borrow money," because a properly cold snap meant the winter barley would grow well. Modern Korea keeps its own first-snow ritual: cheotnun, the season's first snowfall, is treated as a small romantic event — friends and couples text each other the moment it starts, and the weather service's first-snow announcement makes the national news.

'소설 추위는 빚을 내서라도 한다'는 속담이 있는데, 이때 제대로 추워야 겨울 보리가 잘 자란다고 믿었기 때문이다. 현대 한국에는 고유의 첫눈 의식이 남아 있다. 그 해 처음 내리는 눈, '첫눈'은 작은 낭만적 사건으로 취급된다. 눈발이 날리기 시작하는 순간 친구와 연인들이 서로 문자를 보내고, 기상청의 첫눈 관측 발표는 전국 뉴스가 된다.

Pyeongchang: KTX to Jinbu Station (about 1.5h from Seoul), then local bus or taxi. Deoksugung: City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2), exit 2.
Tips.팁. Don't come at Daeseol expecting deep snow — the postcard snowscapes arrive weeks later, and the Taebaeksan Snow Festival in late January is the reliable window. Winter mountain trails ice over: crampons (called 'aizen' in Korea) are sold near park entrances and are effectively mandatory. In Seoul, treat first snow like a local: when cheotnun falls, join everyone strolling the Deoksugung stone-wall road.
