Yudu: The Midsummer Water Ritual

Korea's forgotten summer holiday: washing your hair in an east-flowing stream to rinse away a year of bad luck.

Yudu is one of Korea's least-known traditional holidays, observed on the 15th day of the sixth lunar month — usually mid-July, the sticky heart of summer. On this day, people went to a clear stream flowing east and washed their hair and bathed, believing the moving water would carry away bad luck and the summer's oppressive heat. The name itself is short for a phrase meaning 'bathing and washing one's hair in east-flowing water.'

The custom is old: it traces back to the Silla kingdom, and a Goryeo-era scholar named Kim Geuk-gi recorded people in Gyeongju performing the ritual centuries ago. After the washing came food — wheat was freshly harvested at this time of year, so families made yudu-myeon noodles and other wheat dishes, offering the season's first produce to ancestors before eating together by the water. It was, in essence, a midsummer picnic with a spiritual rinse.

Unlike Chuseok or Dano, Yudu has largely faded from modern life; most young Koreans have never observed it. But it survives in folk museums, regional festivals, and the quiet logic of Korean summer — when the heat peaks, go to the water. Follow that logic yourself and you are, in a way, keeping Yudu.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. National Folk Museum: Subway Line 3 to Anguk Station Exit 1 or Gyeongbokgung Station Exit 5, then walk through the palace grounds. Gyeongju: KTX/SRT to Singyeongju Station (about 2 hours from Seoul), then city bus to the museum. Korean Folk Village: bus 5001-1 from Gangnam Station or a local bus/taxi from Suwon Station.

Tips. Yudu itself has no big public festival today, so treat this as a theme rather than an event: the folk museums' annual-customs exhibits explain the full seasonal calendar including Yudu. If you want the authentic spirit, do as Koreans still do in July — visit a clean valley stream (gyegok), and never leave trash by the water. Check the lunar calendar, as the date shifts each year.

Best time. Mid-July (15th day of the 6th lunar month)
