Hwawoldang 화월당

Suncheon, Seoul · 34.9537, 127.4842

A bakery operating since 1928 that sells exactly two things: soft castella balls filled with red bean, and a mochi version — nothing else, and often nothing at all by mid-afternoon when the day's batch sells out. Come in the morning, buy a box, and eat one warm while it's fresh; the plain paper packaging is part of the charm. It sits beside the central market in old downtown Suncheon, an easy add-on to a market wander.

Local context

Suncheon families phone in orders a day or two ahead for gatherings, which is why walk-ins sometimes find the shelves already empty. The modest storefront gives no hint it is one of the oldest bakeries in the country — locals like it that way.
