Suncheon Bay: Reed Marshes and Migratory Birds

A city took down its own power lines so cranes could come back — and they did, by the thousand.

Suncheon Bay is a broad, shallow inlet on Korea's south coast where a river meets the sea and drops its sediment. The result is roughly 28 square kilometers of tidal flat fringed by one of the country's largest reed beds — a place that looks empty at first glance and is, in fact, one of Korea's densest concentrations of life.

In 2006 it became the first coastal wetland in Korea registered under the Ramsar Convention, and in 2021 the bay was included in 'Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats' on the UNESCO World Heritage List. What makes Suncheon unusual is that the city chose the birds over convenience. After hooded cranes were killed colliding with power infrastructure, Suncheon removed 282 electricity poles and about 12 km of wire from the fields around the bay in 2009, and restricted development nearby.

The numbers followed. Around 167 hooded cranes wintered here in 2006; by 2024 the count had risen past 7,600, making Suncheon Bay one of the species' most important wintering grounds in the world.

The city also turned the buffer land into Suncheonman National Garden, Korea's first National Garden, after hosting the 2013 International Garden Expo. Conservation, here, became the local economy.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX from Seoul's Yongsan Station to Suncheon Station takes roughly 2.5–3 hours. From Suncheon Station or the bus terminal, city buses (routes 66/67 among others) reach the Suncheon Bay Wetland entrance in about 30–40 minutes. The National Garden is closer to the station, and a paid Sky Cube monorail plus a short shuttle links the garden area toward the wetland, so the two sites are easy to combine in one day.

Tips. The signature view is from Yongsan Observatory — a 30–40 minute uphill walk each way from the wetland entrance, worth timing for sunset when the tidal channels turn gold. Wear shoes with grip; the boardwalk and hill path get slick after rain. In crane season keep your voice down, stay on the boardwalk, and use the hides rather than walking toward the birds; drones are not allowed over the reserve. Combined tickets covering the wetland and the National Garden are usually cheaper than buying separately, and both close in the early evening, so start after lunch at the latest.

Best time. October and November for golden reeds; November to February for hooded cranes; spring for the National Garden in flower.
