Suncheon: An Ecological Capital Shaped by Its Wetlands

While other Korean cities built factories on their coastlines, Suncheon bet everything on mud, reeds, and cranes — and won.

Suncheon, on Korea's southern coast, made an unusual bet for a developing country: instead of filling in its coastal wetland for industry, it protected the mud. Suncheon Bay is a vast tidal flat fringed by fields of golden reeds, and every winter it fills with migratory birds — most famously the endangered hooded crane, which winters here in growing numbers. In 2006 the bay became the first Korean coastal wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention, and in 2021 it was inscribed by UNESCO as part of 'Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats,' a World Natural Heritage site recognizing the extraordinary biodiversity of Korea's mudflats. The city then went further. To buffer the wetland from urban sprawl, it built an enormous garden belt between downtown and the bay, hosting an International Garden Expo in 2013 and again in 2023. In 2015 the site was designated Korea's first official National Garden, and it now draws millions of visitors a year. The result is a rare Korean story where conservation itself became the economy: birdwatchers, school groups, and travelers come precisely because the mud was left alone. Watching the sunset flood the S-shaped tidal channel from Yongsan Observatory, you understand why locals call Suncheon Korea's ecological capital.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX from Seoul Yongsan Station to Suncheon Station, about 2.5–3 hours. City buses 66/67 run from the station to the wetland reserve; the Sky Cube people-mover links the National Garden toward the bay area.

Tips. Allow 1.5 hours to walk the reed-field boardwalk plus the climb to Yongsan Observatory — time it for sunset. In crane season parts of the reserve close early to protect roosting birds, so check hours. Combined tickets cover the garden and the wetland reserve.

Best time. Late October–November: reeds turn gold and the hooded cranes arrive. Sunset over the S-shaped tidal channel is the signature view.
