Andong: Where Confucian Clan Culture Still Lives

A 600-year-old village where the same family still lives — and still honors its ancestors.

Andong calls itself the capital of Korean Confucianism, and it has the credentials. Hahoe Village, a riverside settlement founded by the Ryu clan, has been inhabited by the same family for over 600 years — and it still is. When UNESCO inscribed Hahoe (with Yangdong Village) as a World Heritage Site in 2010, the point was exactly this: it is not a reconstruction but a living clan village, with head families (jongga) still performing ancestral rites in their old houses.

Why here? Andong was the heartland of Joseon's scholar-gentry, the yangban elite who governed through Neo-Confucian ideals. Yi Hwang (Toegye), Korea's most revered Confucian philosopher — the man on the 1,000-won bill — taught nearby, and Dosan Seowon, the academy built in his honor, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2019 as one of Korea's historic Confucian academies.

Spend a day here and much of modern Korea starts to make sense: the deep respect for elders, the weight of family, the rituals for ancestors, even the honorific layers of the language all draw on this tradition. And it was never only solemn — Hahoe's famous mask dance, performed for centuries, let commoners openly mock the aristocrats. Watch it, then eat Andong's soy-braised jjimdak, and you have met both faces of the old order.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX-Eum from Seoul Cheongnyangni Station to Andong Station (about 2h), then bus 246 from the station/terminal to Hahoe Village (about 40–50 min) or a 30-min taxi. Dosan Seowon is a separate 40-min bus or taxi ride north of downtown.

Tips. Hahoe is a real residential village — keep voices down and don't enter private courtyards uninvited. Check the mask dance performance schedule before you go (regular weekend shows in season). Cross the river or climb Buyongdae for the best view of the village's famous bend. Try jjimdak at the covered market downtown.

Best time. Late September–October, when the Andong Mask Dance Festival is held and the riverside is at its best.
