Dosan Seowon 도산서원

Andong, Seoul · 36.7279, 128.8404

The lakeside Confucian academy built around the teachings of Toegye Yi Hwang, the 16th-century philosopher whose portrait is on the 1,000-won bill; his original study hall, Dosan Seodang, still stands within the complex. Part of the UNESCO-listed group of Korean seowon, it faces a calm arm of Andong Lake and serves as the gateway to the lesser-known villages and walkways scattered around Dosan-myeon.

Local context

Bring a 1,000-won note: the man on the front studied here, and the painting on the back depicts this very landscape — a story that explains itself on site.
