Andong, Seoul · 36.5651, 128.7447

A 99-room aristocratic house from 1519, the birthplace of Yi Sang-ryong, who sold the family fortune to fund Korea's independence army in Manchuria — eleven independence activists came from this single household. The colonial railway that Japan drove through its front garden was torn out in 2020, and a restoration timed to the 80th anniversary of liberation has brought the grounds back to their pre-colonial layout.

Local context

Koreans know this house from history class as the cradle of the independence movement; almost no foreign visitors come, and the brick pagoda and Woryeonggyo Bridge are both within a ten-minute riverside walk.
