Andong Mask Dance Festival
In Korea's most Confucian city, commoners once wore masks to openly mock the aristocrats — and got away with it.
Every autumn, Andong — a city famous for its strict Confucian clan traditions — throws a festival where the whole point is laughing at authority. The Andong International Mask Dance Festival, held since 1997, is built around Hahoe byeolsingut talnori, a centuries-old mask drama from nearby Hahoe Village in which commoner characters openly ridicule a yangban aristocrat and a pretentious scholar. That is the fascinating paradox: in a rigid status society, masked performance was the one sanctioned space where the lower classes could satirize their superiors, and the elites were expected to take the joke. Hahoe Village itself, a lived-in clan village of the Ryu family, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010, and Korean mask dance (talchum) joined UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022. Today the festival fills downtown Andong and Hahoe Village for about ten days from late September into early October, with Korean and international mask-dance troupes, nightly performances, and hands-on mask making. The most magical sight is seonyu julbulnori, a traditional fire play where embers cascade down the cliff above the river on select festival nights. Come for the spectacle; stay for the rare glimpse of how Koreans historically balanced hierarchy with humor.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. KTX-Eum train from Seoul Cheongnyangni Station to Andong Station (about 2 hours), then city bus 246 or taxi (about 30 min) to Hahoe Village; downtown festival venues are a short taxi ride from Andong Station.
Tips. Check the daily performance schedule and plan around a Hahoe byeolsingut talnori show — it sells the whole festival. The seonyu julbulnori fire play happens only on select nights (usually weekends), so confirm dates in advance. Andong accommodation fills up during the festival; book weeks ahead or consider staying in a hanok guesthouse inside Hahoe Village. Try Andong jjimdak (braised chicken) at the old market.
Best time. Late September to early October, during the festival period
