Every autumn, Andong — a city famous for its strict Confucian clan traditions — throws a festival where the whole point is laughing at authority. The Andong International Mask Dance Festival, held since 1997, is built around Hahoe byeolsingut talnori, a centuries-old mask drama from nearby Hahoe Village in which commoner characters openly ridicule a yangban aristocrat and a pretentious scholar. That is the fascinating paradox: in a rigid status society, masked performance was the one sanctioned space where the lower classes could satirize their superiors, and the elites were expected to take the joke. Hahoe Village itself, a lived-in clan village of the Ryu family, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010, and Korean mask dance (talchum) joined UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022. Today the festival fills downtown Andong and Hahoe Village for about ten days from late September into early October, with Korean and international mask-dance troupes, nightly performances, and hands-on mask making. The most magical sight is seonyu julbulnori, a traditional fire play where embers cascade down the cliff above the river on select festival nights.
