Boryeong Mud Festival보령머드축제

Every July, a quiet beach town on Korea's west coast turns into the country's biggest, messiest party. The Boryeong Mud Festival is exactly what it sounds like: mud wrestling, mud slides, mud pools, mud body-painting — all on the sand of Daecheon Beach.

Why Boryeong? The west coast has some of the world's largest tidal flats, and the mud there is unusually fine-grained and rich in minerals. In the 1990s the city began making cosmetics from it, and in July 1998 it launched a festival as, essentially, a marketing campaign for Boryeong mud cosmetics. The marketing worked beyond anyone's plan: the mud fights became the point, word spread through foreign residents and U.S. soldiers stationed in Korea, and the event grew into an international summer gala drawing around two million visitors in peak years — arguably the one Korean festival where foreigners outnumber expectations everywhere.

Today the festival runs for about two weeks in late July and early August, with a ticketed experience zone on the beach, night concerts, and fireworks. The mud is trucked in from the flats, filtered, and tested. It washes off easily; the sunburn you forgot about does not. Beyond the chaos, the same coastline offers quieter tidal-flat experiences — clam digging at low tide along the same west-coast getbol ecosystem whose nearby stretches, such as the Seocheon tidal flats just to the south, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021.
