Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival
Korea's biggest cherry blossom festival happens in a navy town — and honors an admiral, not the flowers.
For about ten days each spring, the naval port of Jinhae, on the south coast near Busan, disappears under roughly 360,000 cherry trees blooming at once. It is Korea's largest cherry blossom festival, drawing well over two million visitors — yet its official name, Gunhangje, means 'naval port festival,' and its origins have nothing to do with flowers.
Jinhae was built as a naval base town, and in April 1952, during the Korean War, it erected Korea's first statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin — the 16th-century commander who defeated the Japanese fleet — and held a memorial ceremony. That ceremony grew into a full festival in 1963. The cherry trees have their own layered history: many were cut down after liberation in 1945 because of their association with Japan, but replanting resumed on a large scale in the 1960s after Korean botanists argued the king cherry variety was native to Jeju Island. The result is a festival where navy band parades and warship visits share a schedule with flower tunnels.
The two iconic scenes are Yeojwacheon Stream, where blossoms arch over a narrow canal crossed by the 'Romance Bridge,' and Gyeonghwa Station, a disused rail stop where petals drift across the tracks. Bloom lasts barely a week — timing is everything, and all of Korea is trying to time it with you.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. From Seoul: KTX to Changwon Jungang Station (~3 h), then local bus or taxi ~30 min to Jinhae. From Busan: intercity bus from Sasang (Seobu) Terminal to Jinhae, about 1 hour — Busan makes the easiest base.
Tips. Come on a weekday and start at Gyeonghwa Station before 9 a.m.; by late morning the crowds are enormous. Do not step onto the tracks when barriers are in place. Yeojwacheon is beautifully lit at night, so plan blossoms by day and the stream after dark. Accommodation in Jinhae sells out months ahead — stay in Changwon or Busan instead. Bloom dates shift yearly, so check the forecast before booking.
Best time. Late March to early April; full bloom typically lasts only about a week.
