Gyeongju: The Thousand-Year Capital of Silla

One dynasty, one capital, almost a thousand years — this whole city is an open-air museum.

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years, from 57 BC to AD 935 — one of the longest runs any city has had as the seat of a single dynasty anywhere in the world. Silla started as one of Korea's Three Kingdoms and eventually unified most of the peninsula in the 7th century, turning Gyeongju into a center of Buddhist art, royal power, and astronomy.

Because the capital never moved, everything accumulated in one place: grassy royal burial mounds rise right between cafes and bus stops, and Cheomseongdae — a 7th-century stone tower built under Queen Seondeok, considered the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia — stands in an open field you can simply walk up to. UNESCO recognized this concentration twice: Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto in 1995, and the wider Gyeongju Historic Areas in 2000.

Today Gyeongju is a relaxed mid-size city where the past is not fenced off but lived with. Koreans call it 'the museum without walls,' and school trips here are almost a rite of passage. Rent a bike, ride between tomb mounds and lotus ponds, and you will understand why: history here is not behind glass — it is the landscape itself.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX/SRT from Seoul to Singyeongju Station (about 2h), then a local bus or 15-min taxi to the historic center. Bulguksa and Seokguram are reached by city bus from downtown; a shuttle bus links Bulguksa to Seokguram up the mountain.

Tips. Rent a bicycle downtown — the tomb park, Cheomseongdae, and Wolji Pond are all flat and close together. Visit Donggung/Wolji again after dark for the famous night reflection view. Do not climb on the burial mounds; they are royal tombs, not hills.

Best time. Late March–early April for cherry blossoms around the tombs, or October–early November for autumn colors at Bulguksa.
