Busan: The Wartime Capital Born of the Korean War
Korea's fun-loving second city was once the last refuge of a nation at war.
Busan today is Korea's breezy second city — beaches, film festival, seafood. But its modern character was forged in its darkest chapter. When the Korean War broke out in 1950 and Seoul fell within days, Busan became the provisional capital, serving in that role for a combined 1,023 days between 1950 and 1953. It was one of the few major cities never captured, an anchor of the last defensive line.
Refugees poured in from all over the peninsula — hundreds of thousands of them, more than the city's own population — and they built homes wherever they could, stacking shacks up the steep hillsides. That history is still visible. Gamcheon Culture Village, the pastel 'Lego village' on every Busan postcard, began as one of those refugee hillside settlements; artists and residents transformed it from 2009. Gukje Market grew from stalls where refugees traded to survive. And the UN Memorial Cemetery, holding some 2,300 graves of soldiers from the multinational UN forces, is the only United Nations cemetery in the world.
So Busan's famous warmth — the loud markets, the direct dialect, the improvised energy — carries a memory: this is a city built partly by people who arrived with nothing. Visit the colorful hillsides and busy alleys knowing that, and Busan becomes much more than a beach town.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. KTX from Seoul to Busan Station (about 2h 30m). For Gamcheon: Metro Line 1 to Toseong Station, then the Seo-gu 2 or 2-2 village bus up the hill (or a 10-min taxi). Gukje Market is a short walk from Jagalchi Station; the UN Cemetery is near Daeyeon Station (Line 2).
Tips. Gamcheon is a lived-in neighborhood, not a film set — keep quiet in the alleys and never photograph into homes. At the UN Memorial Cemetery, dress modestly and keep a respectful silence; it is an active place of remembrance where veterans' families visit. Try bibim-dangmyeon and ssiat hotteok at Gukje Market.
Best time. September–November for clear skies; the UN Cemetery holds its international memorial ceremony on November 11 (Turn Toward Busan).
