Incheon: The Gateway Where Modern Korea Began인천: 개항이 연 근대 한국의 관문

Most travelers know Incheon only as an airport code. But long before the airport, Incheon was Korea's door to the modern world. In 1883, the small fishing port of Jemulpo was opened to foreign trade after centuries of Joseon's closed-door policy — and the outside world rushed in. Japanese, Chinese, and Western traders built banks, consulates, and warehouses along the waterfront, giving the district an architectural mix Korea had never seen.

The firsts piled up. Korea's first railway, the Gyeongin Line, opened in 1899 connecting Jemulpo to Noryangjin, on the outskirts of Seoul (it was extended into central Seoul in 1900, once the Han River bridge was completed). The Daebul Hotel, built in 1888, was the country's first Western-style hotel. Chinese migrants from Shandong formed Korea's first Chinatown, and it was there — at the restaurant Gonghwachun — that jajangmyeon, the black-bean noodle dish now eaten some countless times a day across Korea, took shape as a cheap meal for dockworkers.

Today the Open Port district is a compact, walkable museum of that era: restored bank buildings, the jajangmyeon museum inside old Gonghwachun, and a hillside park where East and West literally meet at a stairway boundary. Paired with Songdo's futuristic skyline nearby, Incheon tells Korea's whole modern arc — from forced opening to global hub — in a single city.
