Jeonju: Cradle of the Joseon Royal Family, Home of Pansori and Bibimbap전주: 조선 왕실의 뿌리, 판소리와 비빔밥의 고향

Jeonju is where the Joseon dynasty — the royal house that ruled Korea for five centuries — traces its family roots. Yi Seong-gye, who founded Joseon in 1392 and became King Taejo, came from a clan whose ancestral home was Jeonju, so the new dynasty honored the city as its 'royal hometown.' The Gyeonggijeon Shrine, built to enshrine King Taejo's portrait, still stands here — the only one remaining of the shrines once built across the country for his veneration.

That royal prestige helped Jeonju grow into the cultural heart of the Jeolla region: a center of pansori (Korea's UNESCO-listed epic singing tradition), hanji paper, and above all, food. Jeonju is celebrated as the home of bibimbap, and in 2012 UNESCO designated it a City of Gastronomy. Koreans routinely say the country's best everyday meals are eaten here.

Today the draw is Jeonju Hanok Village, a district of over 700 traditional tile-roofed houses beside the shrine — one of the largest hanok clusters in Korea. It is touristy, yes: expect hanbok rentals, street snacks, and crowds. But walk one block into the quieter alleys, or visit a pansori performance, and you feel what the village really is — not a theme park, but the identity of a dynasty kept alive at street level.
