These forty stone steps were where Korean War refugees traded relief goods and posted notes searching for separated family, just two blocks from the Nampo-dong shopping crowds. The surrounding street is dressed in 1950s-60s retro style, with bronze statues of a popcorn vendor and a mother with her children, and a small free museum on the refugee era nearby.

Local context

Most passersby photograph the accordion-player statue on the mid-landing and move on; the free 40 Steps Culture Center just uphill explains why these stairs mattered and is rarely crowded.
