Gyeongju: Capital of a Thousand-Year Kingdom

One dynasty, one capital, almost a thousand years — which is why Gyeongju's downtown is dotted with royal tombs the size of hills.

Most capitals change with each dynasty. Gyeongju did not. It served as the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years — by traditional dates, from 57 BCE to 935 CE — one of the longest runs of any capital city in the world. When Silla unified most of the Korean peninsula in the 7th century, Gyeongju became the heart of a Buddhist golden age.

That longevity explains the city's strangest and loveliest feature: giant grass-covered royal tombs rising like green hills right beside cafes and streets. With no dynasty after Silla building over the city, its monuments simply stayed. Koreans call Gyeongju 'a museum without walls,' and UNESCO agrees twice over: Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple were inscribed as World Heritage in 1995, and the wider Gyeongju Historic Areas followed in 2000. Bulguksa, completed in 774, is a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture; Seokguram, an artificial stone grotto on the mountain above it, holds a serene 8th-century seated Buddha gazing toward the sea. In town, Cheomseongdae — a small bottle-shaped stone tower — is the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia.

Today Gyeongju is an easy KTX day trip from Seoul, though it deserves a night: the tomb park and Donggung Palace pond are at their most magical after dark, softly lit under the same sky Silla astronomers watched.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX from Seoul Station to Singyeongju Station (about 2 hours), then city bus or a 15-20 minute taxi to the downtown historic district. Bulguksa and Seokguram are reached by city bus from downtown (bus to Bulguksa, then a shuttle bus or short taxi up the mountain to Seokguram).

Tips. Rent a bicycle downtown — the tombs, Cheomseongdae, and Wolji pond are flat and close together. Save Donggung & Wolji for after sunset; it is Korea's best-known night view. At Seokguram the Buddha is viewed through glass and photography of the statue is not allowed. Downtown fills with hanok guesthouses; book ahead in cherry-blossom season.

Best time. Early April for cherry blossoms around the tombs and Bomun Lake; October-November for autumn colors on the Bulguksa approach.
