Korean History at a Glance: From Gojoseon to Joseon

Learn five names — Gojoseon, Three Kingdoms, Unified Silla, Goryeo, Joseon — and every palace and museum in Korea starts to make sense.

Korean history can feel overwhelming, but the backbone is simple: a handful of kingdoms in sequence. It begins with Gojoseon, which tradition says was founded in 2333 BCE by Dangun, a mythical figure born of a heavenly prince and a bear who became a woman. Whatever the legend's truth, Gojoseon was the peninsula's first known state.

From around the 1st century BCE, three kingdoms competed for the peninsula: Goguryeo in the north, Baekje in the southwest, and Silla in the southeast. In 668 CE, Silla unified most of the peninsula, ushering in a golden age of Buddhist art centered on its capital, Gyeongju. Silla gave way in 918-935 to Goryeo (918-1392), a dynasty famous for jade-green celadon ceramics — and the origin of the English name 'Korea.' Finally came Joseon (1392-1897), the 500-year Confucian dynasty that built Seoul's palaces, invented the Hangul alphabet, and shaped the etiquette and family culture you still see today. It ended as the short-lived Korean Empire before Japanese annexation in 1910.

Why does this matter for a traveler? Because almost everything you visit maps onto this timeline: Gyeongju's tombs are Silla, celadon in museums is Goryeo, and Gyeongbokgung Palace is pure Joseon. Hold the sequence in mind, and Korea's sights stop being isolated photo spots and become chapters of one long story.
