Baekje's Elegance: Gongju and Buyeo

The refined kingdom that helped carry Buddhism to Japan — and a royal tomb found untouched after 1,400 years.

Of Korea's ancient Three Kingdoms, Baekje (traditionally 18 BCE - 660 CE) is the one historians describe with words like refined and graceful. Based in the peninsula's fertile southwest, Baekje was a maritime kingdom at the crossroads of China, Korea, and Japan — absorbing continental culture and passing it onward. In 538 or 552 CE, Baekje's King Seong sent a Buddha image and scriptures to the Japanese court, the event usually cited as the beginning of Buddhism in Japan, and Baekje artisans and scholars deeply influenced Japan's Asuka culture.

After losing its early capital near modern Seoul, Baekje moved its court to Ungjin (today's Gongju) in 475, then to Sabi (today's Buyeo) in 538. These quiet riverside towns hold what remains: fortress walls, temple sites, and royal tombs, inscribed together as the UNESCO World Heritage 'Baekje Historic Areas' in 2015. The star discovery came in 1971, when drainage work in Gongju accidentally revealed the Tomb of King Muryeong — completely intact, with nearly 3,000 artifacts including the king's and queen's golden diadems. It remains one of Korea's greatest archaeological finds.

Unlike Gyeongju, Gongju and Buyeo see few foreign visitors, which is part of their charm: you can stand on Busosanseong fortress above the Baengma River almost alone, imagining the kingdom whose aesthetics quietly shaped two countries.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. Express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Gongju (about 1.5-2 hours) or to Buyeo (about 2 hours); the two towns are connected by frequent local intercity buses taking roughly 40-50 minutes, so both fit in one overnight trip.

Tips. At the Muryeong tomb site you enter a full-scale replica chamber — the original is sealed for preservation, and the treasures themselves are displayed at the Gongju National Museum nearby, so pair the two. Buyeo's Busosanseong is a gentle 1-2 hour forest walk ending at Nakhwaam cliff over the Baengma River. English signage exists at all UNESCO sites but staff English is limited; translation apps help.

Best time. Late September-October, when the weather is crisp and the Geum River area is at its best (spring cherry blossoms at Gongsanseong are also lovely).
