Hampyeong Butterfly Festival
A small farming county with no famous mountains or landmarks bet everything on butterflies — and won.
Hampyeong, a small farming county in Jeollanam-do in Korea's southwest, had a problem many rural areas share: no famous mountain, no beach resort, no landmark to draw visitors. In 1999 it made an unusual bet — butterflies.
The logic was clever. Butterflies thrive only in a clean environment, so a butterfly festival doubled as a certificate of the county's unpolluted farmland. Hampyeong leaned into eco-friendly agriculture and branded its produce around the butterfly image. The county promotes the event as the world's first festival built around live butterflies, insects, and nature, and it has run nearly every year since 1999 (the 2020 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19), timed to late April and early May when spring flowers cover the festival grounds.
Today the festival centers on the Hampyeong Expo Park, where greenhouses swirl with thousands of live butterflies, flower fields bloom in patterns, and exhibition halls display insects from around the world. Children chase loaches in mud ponds and watch butterfly releases. For Korea-watchers, the festival is a textbook case of regional revitalization: a county that had little to sell turned a clean-environment image into an identity, drawing large crowds to a place most Koreans once could not find on a map. It is a gentler, greener answer to the question every shrinking rural region in Korea faces — how do you get people to come?
If you go가신다면
Getting there. KTX/SRT to Gwangju-Songjeong Station, then a short local train ride (about 20 minutes) or intercity bus to Hampyeong; the Expo Park is a short taxi ride from Hampyeong Station or the bus terminal.
Tips. Go on a warm, sunny late morning — butterflies are most active then and weekday crowds are lighter. Buy the combined admission covering the exhibition halls, and look for local 'butterfly rice' and other eco-branded farm products as souvenirs. Bring sun protection; much of the site is open flower fields.
Best time. Late April to early May, on a sunny day
