Icheon Ceramics Festival이천 도자기축제

Icheon, a small city an hour southeast of Seoul, is where Korea's thousand-year ceramic tradition still operates at industrial and artistic scale. The Icheon Ceramics Festival, held every year since 1987, is the country's largest celebration of that craft. Korea's ceramic pedigree is serious: Goryeo-era celadon (cheongja) was prized across East Asia for its jade-green glaze, and Joseon white porcelain (baekja) embodied Confucian ideals of restraint and purity. Icheon's advantages — good clay, abundant firewood, and proximity to the capital — made it a natural pottery center, and after Korea's traditional kilns declined in the colonial era, master potters regrouped here in the mid-20th century to revive celadon, buncheong, and white porcelain techniques. Today the Icheon area hosts roughly 300 working studios, and in 2010 UNESCO designated Icheon a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art — one of Korea's first two cities in the network, designated alongside Seoul (City of Design), and Korea's first in the crafts and folk art field. The festival, centered on the Cerapia complex in Seolbong Park, mixes museum-grade exhibitions with a very hands-on spirit: you can throw a pot on a wheel, paint your own piece, and buy directly from artisans at prices well below Seoul galleries. It's the rare festival where the souvenir is something a master made — or something you did.
