Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival진주남강유등축제

Every October, tens of thousands of lanterns glow on the Namgang River beneath Jinju Fortress, in one of Korea's most photographed autumn scenes. But these floating lights carry a heavier story than they first appear.

During the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War), Jinju Fortress was the site of a famous 1592 battle in which General Kim Si-min's badly outnumbered defenders held the walls. Lanterns floated on the river served practical purposes: as military signals, as a way to deter night crossings of the river, and as a means for soldiers to send word to families outside the walls. The following year, in 1593, the fortress fell in a second siege and its defenders were killed. Floating lanterns on the Namgang afterward became a way of consoling the spirits of the dead.

That memorial practice was revived as a lantern event within the Gaecheon Arts Festival, first held in 1949, and grew into a full-scale international lantern festival in October 2000. Today the festival fills the river with themed lantern installations, wish lanterns, and floating tunnels of light, and the national culture ministry has repeatedly selected it as one of Korea's representative festivals.
