A 1,200-year-old river of lanterns flows through downtown Seoul every spring — and you're invited to walk in it.
Every spring, central Seoul fills with a slow-moving river of glowing paper lanterns. This is Yeon Deung Hoe, the Lotus Lantern Festival, held to celebrate Buddha's Birthday — the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, a national holiday that usually falls in late April or May.
The tradition is ancient. Lantern-lighting ceremonies date back more than 1,200 years to the Silla kingdom, and continued under different names through the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Lighting a lantern symbolizes brightening the world and one's own mind with wisdom and compassion. In 2020, UNESCO inscribed Yeon Deung Hoe on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing not just the spectacle but its openness — the committee noted how the festival erases social boundaries, with everyone welcome to join.
Today the highlight is the Grand Lantern Parade, usually held the weekend before the holiday: tens of thousands of participants carry handmade lanterns roughly three kilometers along Jongno, from the Dongdaemun area to Jogyesa Temple. Enormous illuminated floats — dragons, elephants, pagodas — glide between the office towers. You do not need to be Buddhist to take part; many foreign residents join lantern-making workshops and even march in the parade. It is one of the easiest ways to touch a living, ancient tradition in the middle of a modern megacity.

하이라이트는 부처님오신날 직전 주말에 열리는 연등행렬입니다. 수만 명이 손수 만든 등을 들고 동대문 일대에서 조계사까지 종로 약 3km를 행진하고, 용·코끼리·탑 모양의 대형 장엄등이 빌딩 숲 사이를 지나갑니다. 불교 신자가 아니어도 누구나 참여할 수 있어, 외국인 주민들도 연등 만들기 체험과 행렬에 함께합니다. 현대 대도시 한가운데에서 살아 있는 천 년의 전통을 가장 쉽게 만나는 방법입니다.

Getting there.가는 법. Subway Line 1 to Jonggak Station (Exit 2) or Line 3 to Anguk Station for Jogyesa Temple; the parade can be watched anywhere along Jongno between Dongdaemun and Jonggak.
Tips.팁. Free and open to everyone regardless of religion. Claim a curbside spot 1-2 hours before the evening parade; the post-parade celebration near Jonggak intersection lets you dance with performers. Inside temple halls, keep quiet, remove shoes where indicated, and avoid flash photography during ceremonies.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. The weekend before Buddha's Birthday (late April to May; in 2026 the main weekend is May 16-17)
