NadeMangjong: Rice Planting Season망종 — 모내기와 보리베기의 계절
One frantic week in early June: cut the barley, flood the paddies, plant the rice — Korea's whole farm year hinges on it.
Mangjong, the ninth of the 24 solar terms, falls around June 5-6. The name means 'awned seeds' — grains with bristly whiskers, like barley and rice. It marks the single busiest moment of the traditional Korean farm year, because two jobs collide: the winter barley must be harvested, and the rice seedlings must be transplanted into flooded paddies, on the same land, within days of each other.
An old proverb says 'cut the barley before Mangjong' — wait longer and early-summer winds shatter the ripe stalks, and you lose the window to prepare the paddies for rice. In Korea's double-cropping system, this handoff between barley and rice was the hinge of the entire year. Villages even practiced Mangjong bogi, divining the barley harvest from which date the term fell on. Rice transplanting itself, monaegi, was backbreaking communal labor: neighbors moved from paddy to paddy together, planting seedlings in lines, sharing food and work songs.
Machines do most of it now, but the landscape still keeps the calendar. Drive through the countryside in early June and you will see newly flooded paddies mirroring the sky, stitched with tender green rows — one of rural Korea's most beautiful and least advertised sights.
망종은 24절기 중 아홉 번째로, 양력 6월 5~6일 무렵이다. 이름은 '까끄라기(芒)가 있는 씨앗(種)'이라는 뜻 — 보리와 벼처럼 수염 달린 곡식을 가리킨다. 전통 농사력에서 일 년 중 가장 바쁜 순간이 바로 이때다. 겨울을 난 보리를 베어내는 일과, 물을 댄 논에 모를 옮겨 심는 일이 같은 땅 위에서 며칠 간격으로 맞물리기 때문이다.
'보리는 망종 전에 베라'는 속담이 있다. 더 미루면 초여름 바람에 익은 이삭이 떨어지고, 모내기 준비 시간도 사라진다. 보리에서 벼로 이어지는 이 이어달리기가 이모작 농사의 한 해 전체를 좌우했다. 망종이 든 날짜로 그해 보리 농사를 점치는 '망종보기' 풍습까지 있었을 정도다. 모내기는 고된 공동 노동이었다. 이웃들이 논에서 논으로 함께 옮겨 다니며 줄 맞춰 모를 심고, 새참과 노동요를 나눴다.
지금은 이앙기가 대부분을 대신하지만, 풍경은 여전히 절기를 지킨다. 6월 초 시골길을 달리면 하늘을 그대로 비추는 물 댄 논과 그 위에 줄지어 선 연둣빛 모를 볼 수 있다. 한국 농촌에서 가장 아름답지만 가장 덜 알려진 장면 중 하나다.

Getting there.가는 법. Namhae: intercity bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Namhae-eup (about 4.5 hours), then a local bus or 20-min taxi to Gacheon Daraengi Village. For an easy urban primer, the Agricultural Museum is right by Seodaemun Station (Line 5) in Seoul.
Tips.팁. The terraces are most dramatic just after flooding and transplanting, when the paddies act as mirrors. Paths through the village are steep — real residents farm here, so stay on marked trails and don't step onto paddy banks. Sunset over the sea-facing terraces is the classic shot.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. Early to mid-June, right after rice transplanting, when flooded paddies reflect the sky; golden harvest views come in October.
