Namwon Chunhyang Festival

Korea's oldest festival celebrates a love story that defied class — held in the very garden where the lovers first met.

Every spring, the small southern city of Namwon throws a festival for two people who never existed — and Koreans wouldn't have it any other way. The Chunhyang Festival honors Chunhyangjeon, Korea's most beloved classic love story: Chunhyang, the daughter of a gisaeng (a low-status female entertainer), secretly marries Mongryong, a nobleman's son, then endures imprisonment rather than betray him. In the rigid Confucian hierarchy of Joseon, their love was quietly radical, which is exactly why the story — told through pansori, Korea's epic sung storytelling — became a national treasure of the imagination. The festival began in 1931, during Japanese colonial rule, making it Korea's oldest running cultural festival; keeping Chunhyang's story alive was also a quiet way of keeping Korean identity alive. Its stage is Gwanghallu-won, the actual garden and pavilion where the fictional lovers are said to have met. First built in the Joseon era and rebuilt in 1626 after wartime destruction, the pavilion was designated a National Treasure in 2026. Today the festival — its 96th edition ran in spring 2026 — fills Namwon with lantern-lit riverbanks, pansori performances, traditional wedding reenactments, and hanbok-clad crowds. It is part romance, part living museum of Korea's performing arts.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX from Seoul Yongsan Station on the Jeolla Line to Namwon Station (about 2 hours), then a 10-minute taxi or local bus to Gwanghallu-won.

Tips. Book accommodation weeks ahead if visiting during the festival — Namwon is small and fills up fast. Gwanghallu-won charges a small admission fee (free during some festival periods). Renting hanbok makes the lantern-lit evening riverside especially photogenic. Pansori performances are sung in old Korean, but the emotional delivery needs no translation.

Best time. Early May, during the festival (around the Children's Day holiday week); the garden is also beautiful in autumn.
