Walk into a Korean home on a holiday morning and you may see a table laden with food, an ancestor's photo or name tablet, and family members bowing. This is charye — not religious worship, but a Confucian ritual of remembrance, a way of serving ancestors 'as if they were present.'

The terms matter. Jesa is the umbrella word for ancestral memorial rites. Charye is the simplified version held on holiday mornings, mainly Seollal and Chuseok: wine is offered just once and no formal prayer text is read. Gijesa is the fuller, more solemn rite held at night on the anniversary of an ancestor's death, with three wine offerings and a written prayer (chukmun) read aloud. Most Koreans experience both across the year.

The rites descend from Joseon-era Confucian ideals of filial duty extending beyond death. Today they are changing fast: tables are shrinking, some families skip them, and Christians often replace them with memorial prayers. Even Sungkyunkwan — the historic Confucian academy and the recognized authority on ritual — has publicly endorsed simpler charye tables, noting that sincerity matters more than the number of dishes; in a separate poll of 847 adults by the job search website Incruit, 94.3% favored simplification. For a visitor, the takeaway is simple: the bowing is respect and memory, not idol worship, and understanding that dissolves most misunderstandings.
