On the morning of Seollal (Lunar New Year), younger family members perform sebae — a deep, formal bow to their elders. In return, the elder offers deokdam, words of blessing for the year ahead, and children receive sebaetdon: crisp bills, often in a pretty envelope. It is the emotional centerpiece of the holiday, a physical expression of respect that runs from grandchildren up to grandparents.
The bow itself has rules rooted in Confucian etiquette. Before bowing, you fold your hands: men place the left hand over the right, women the right over the left. Men kneel and bow deeply until their hands and forehead approach the floor; women traditionally raise their joined hands to shoulder height and lower themselves more gently. The positions are reversed for condolences, which is why Koreans notice when it is done wrong.
Sebaetdon is not payment — it is a blessing made tangible, and parents often bank it for their children. Today many families keep the custom alive even in small apartments, with hanbok optional and mobile transfers occasionally replacing envelopes. If you are invited to a Korean home for Seollal, nobody expects a foreigner to bow perfectly; a sincere attempt usually delights everyone.
