Korea's biggest holiday celebrates the full moon with a half-moon rice cake — and the reason is a 1,300-year-old prophecy.
Chuseok, held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (usually September or early October), is often called Korean Thanksgiving. Families gather under the year's brightest full moon to share the new harvest, hold charye memorial rites for ancestors, and visit family graves. It is one of Korea's two biggest holidays, a three-day public holiday that moves tens of millions of people.
Its signature food is songpyeon: small rice cakes filled with sesame, sweet beans, or chestnut, steamed on a bed of pine needles — the 'song' in songpyeon means pine, and the needles lend aroma and a delicate surface pattern. Curiously, for a full-moon festival, songpyeon is shaped like a half moon. A famous legend from the Baekje era tells of a prophecy — 'Baekje is the full moon, Silla the half moon' — meaning Baekje had peaked and could only wane, while Silla was still rising. Silla did prevail, and the half moon became a symbol of growth and a brighter future. Folk belief adds a charming twist: shape your songpyeon beautifully, and you will meet a good-looking spouse or have a beautiful child.
Families traditionally make songpyeon together on Chuseok eve. For visitors, palaces and folk villages run open holiday programs, and many offer songpyeon-making sessions — one of the easiest, warmest entry points into Korean holiday culture.
음력 8월 15일(보통 9월~10월 초)에 쇠는 추석은 흔히 '한국의 추수감사절'로 불린다. 가족들은 한 해 가장 밝은 보름달 아래 모여 햇곡식을 나누고, 조상께 차례를 지내고, 성묘를 간다. 설과 함께 한국의 양대 명절로, 사흘 연휴 동안 수천만 명이 이동한다.
대표 음식은 송편이다. 깨·콩·밤 소를 넣은 작은 떡을 솔잎 위에 얹어 찌는데, 송편의 '송(松)'이 소나무라는 뜻이다. 솔잎은 향과 함께 표면에 은은한 무늬를 남긴다. 보름달 축제인데 송편은 반달 모양이라는 점이 흥미롭다. 백제 의자왕 때 '백제는 만월이요 신라는 반달'이라는 예언이 전해지는데, 가득 찬 달은 기울 일만 남았고 반달은 차오를 일만 남았다는 뜻이었다. 실제로 신라가 승리했고, 이후 반달은 성장과 밝은 미래의 상징이 됐다. 여기에 '송편을 예쁘게 빚으면 예쁜 배우자를 만나거나 예쁜 아이를 낳는다'는 속설이 정겨움을 더한다.
전통적으로 가족이 추석 전날 모여 함께 송편을 빚는다. 방문자라면 명절 기간 고궁·민속촌의 개방 행사와 송편 빚기 체험이 한국 명절 문화로 들어가는 가장 쉽고 따뜻한 입구다.

Tips.팁. Plan around closures: on Chuseok day itself many small restaurants and shops shut, while palaces and museums typically stay open with free entry or special events — check each site's notice. Do NOT plan intercity travel on the day before or after Chuseok (peak traffic). Book any KTX tickets as early as possible.
Best time.가기 좋은 때. The 3-day Chuseok holiday (mid-September–early October, varies by lunar calendar); the full moon rises on Chuseok evening — Namsan and riversides are popular dalmaji (moon-viewing) spots.
