A million people, one dish: why Korea's fried-chicken capital throws a giant summer party for chicken and beer.
Not every Korean festival is about ancient rituals. The Daegu Chimac Festival, launched in 2013 at Duryu Park, celebrates something thoroughly modern: chimaek, the beloved pairing of fried chicken (chi-) and beer (maek-ju). The word entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 2021, alongside 'K-drama' and 'mukbang'. Why Daegu? The city is a cradle of Korea's fried-chicken industry. In 1978, a fried chicken shop opened in Daegu's Hyomok Market that grew into Mexican Chicken, the first fried-chicken franchise born in Daegu and a driving force behind yangnyeom (seasoned) chicken — though Korea's first modern fried-chicken franchise, Lims Chicken, had opened in Seoul in 1977. Brands like Mexicana, Cheogajip, and Kyochon followed from the region. The 1970s boom in poultry farming and mass-produced cooking oil turned fried chicken into an affordable everyman's food, and Daegu — one of Korea's hottest cities in summer — perfected the art of pairing it with cold beer. The festival leaned into that identity. The first edition drew about 270,000 visitors in four days; recent editions have drawn around a million people to five days of chicken from dozens of vendors, beer stations, live music, and water-spray events in the July heat. It is loud, cheerful, and unpretentious — a good window into how contemporary Koreans actually celebrate, and proof that food culture doesn't need centuries of history to bring a whole city together.
한국의 축제가 모두 오래된 의례에서 나온 것은 아니다. 2013년 두류공원에서 시작된 대구 치맥페스티벌은 지극히 현대적인 것, 즉 치킨과 맥주의 조합 '치맥'을 기념한다. '치맥(chimaek)'이라는 단어는 2021년 K-드라마, 먹방과 함께 옥스퍼드 영어사전에 등재되기까지 했다. 왜 대구일까? 대구는 한국 치킨 산업의 요람 중 하나다. 1978년 대구 효목시장에서 문을 연 치킨집이 대구에서 탄생한 최초의 치킨 프랜차이즈 '멕시칸치킨'으로 성장해 양념치킨 대중화를 이끌었고 — 한국 최초의 현대식 치킨 프랜차이즈는 1977년 서울에서 문을 연 림스치킨이다 — 멕시카나·처갓집·교촌 등이 이 지역에서 뒤를 이었다. 1970년대 양계 산업과 식용유 대량생산이 맞물리며 치킨은 서민 음식이 됐고, 여름이 유난히 더운 대구는 차가운 맥주와의 궁합을 완성했다. 축제는 이 정체성을 그대로 담았다. 첫해 나흘간 약 27만 명이 찾았고, 최근에는 닷새간 100만 명 안팎이 몰린다. 수십 개 치킨 브랜드 부스, 생맥주, 라이브 공연, 물뿌리기 이벤트가 7월의 더위 속에 펼쳐진다. 시끌벅적하고 격식 없는 이 축제는 오늘의 한국인이 실제로 노는 방식을 보여주는 창이자, 음식 문화가 수백 년의 역사 없이도 도시 하나를 하나로 묶을 수 있다는 증거다.

Getting there.가는 법. KTX/SRT from Seoul to Dongdaegu Station (about 1h 50m), then Daegu Metro Line 1 to Banwoldang, transfer to Line 2, and get off at Duryu Station — the park is right there.
Tips.팁. Entry is free; you pay per chicken-and-beer purchase, so bring a card and cash. Go after 6 p.m. — July afternoons in Daegu regularly top 33°C. Expect long lines at famous brand booths; lesser-known local vendors are often just as good. Pace the beer: festival servings add up fast.
