Dano: Sweet-Flag Water and the Gangneung Festival단오 — 창포물과 강릉단오제

Dano falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, usually late May or June. In old Korea it ranked among the most important days of the year — the moment when the sun's energy was believed strongest, right after the seeds were sown. It was a rare festive pause in the farming calendar, and it came with its own sensory rituals: women washed their hair in water infused with changpo (sweet flag, an iris-like plant) for shine and good fortune, then soared on tall swings; men wrestled ssireum in sand rings; everyone ate surichwi tteok, a chewy rice cake tinted green with mountain herbs.

While Dano faded from most of modern Korea's calendar, one city never let go. Gangneung, on the east coast, holds the Gangneung Danoje — a festival tradition roughly a millennium old, protected as Korea's Important Intangible Cultural Heritage since 1967 and inscribed by UNESCO in 2005. It is remarkable for what it preserves: weeks of shamanic gut rituals honoring the guardian deity of Daegwallyeong pass, the Gwanno mask drama, and a riverside fairground along Namdaecheon Stream where you can still wash your hair in iris water.

For visitors, it is the closest thing to time travel Korea offers — living folk religion, not a reenactment.
