Gangneung is a seaside city on Korea's east coast, backed by the Taebaek Mountains and facing the deep blue East Sea. Take out Korean cash and you'll meet the city twice: the 50,000-won note shows Shin Saimdang (1504–1551), a celebrated painter and calligrapher, and the 5,000-won note shows her son Yi I, pen name Yulgok, one of Joseon's greatest Confucian scholars. Both were born at Ojukheon, a black-bamboo-shaded house in Gangneung that still stands as one of Korea's oldest surviving residences — a mother and son on the national currency, born in the same house. The city's other treasure is the Gangneung Danoje, a festival held around the fifth day of the fifth lunar month that blends shamanic rituals, mask dance, and folk games; UNESCO recognized it as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. Modern Gangneung has added an unexpected identity: coffee. Anmok Beach's cafe-lined 'Coffee Street' and a yearly coffee festival have made the city Korea's unofficial coffee capital, where people drink hand-drip brews facing the waves. Since the KTX line built for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, all of this sits just about two hours from Seoul.

Getting there.가는 법. KTX from Seoul Station or Cheongnyangni to Gangneung Station, about 2 hours. From the station, local buses or a short taxi ride reach Ojukheon, Gyeongpo, and Anmok Beach.
Tips.팁. Rent a bike to loop Gyeongpo Lake between sights. At Anmok, skip the chains and pick a small roastery with sea-view seats. Check the lunar calendar if you want the Danoje — the festival week (usually June) books out local accommodation early.
