Dokdo: Why It Matters to Koreans
Two tiny rocks in the East Sea carry the weight of a nation's memory — and yes, you can actually sail there.
Dokdo is a pair of small volcanic islets in the East Sea, about 87 km southeast of Ulleungdo Island. Korea administers them today, with a small police detachment stationed there, while Japan also claims them — you may see the name "Takeshima" in Japanese sources.
Why does such a tiny place stir such deep feeling? Korean records trace ties back to 512 AD, when the kingdom of Silla incorporated Usan-guk, the state centered on Ulleungdo. The emotional core, though, is more recent: Japan incorporated the islets in 1905, five years before it annexed Korea entirely. For many Koreans, Dokdo thus became the first territory lost to colonization and a symbol of sovereignty regained in 1945. Children learn songs about it; ferries fill with visitors who treat the trip almost like a pilgrimage.
Visiting is a genuine adventure. You first take a ferry to Ulleungdo (about 3–4 hours from Pohang, Gangneung, Mukho, or Hupo), stay on that spectacular volcanic island, then join a Dokdo tour ferry for the roughly 1.5–2 hour crossing. Landing is only possible in calm seas and is often cancelled — and even a successful landing means about 20–30 minutes on the dock. Most travelers consider Ulleungdo itself, with its cliffs and seafood, the real prize, with Dokdo as the emotional finale.
If you go가신다면
Getting there. Ferry from Pohang, Gangneung, Mukho (Donghae), or Hupo to Ulleungdo (about 3–4 hours), then a Dokdo tour ferry from Ulleungdo (about 1.5–2 hours each way). Book both legs in advance; ID or passport is required for boarding.
Tips. Plan 2–3 days on Ulleungdo, since sea conditions frequently cancel or delay boats — never book a tight return connection. Landing on Dokdo is not guaranteed even after sailing there; if you do land, you get roughly 20–30 minutes near the dock. Treat the visit respectfully: for Korean fellow passengers this is an emotional place, not just a photo stop.
Best time. May to September, when seas are calmest and ferry schedules fullest; typhoon season (late summer) can disrupt sailings.
