Gunsan: Colonial Rice Port and Museum of Modern Architecture

A port built to ship Korea's rice to Japan — its banks, customs house, and Japanese houses still stand, letting you walk through colonial history.

Gunsan, on Korea's west coast, is one of the few places where you can physically walk through the colonial period (1910-1945). Its streets preserve an unusual concentration of early-20th-century banks, warehouses, temples, and Japanese-style houses — buildings that exist because of a painful reason.

Gunsan was a small fishing town until its port opened to international trade in 1899. Under Japanese rule it became the main outlet for shipping rice from the fertile Honam plain to Japan, while many Korean farmers who grew that rice went hungry. Japanese banks, trading companies, and landlords built the town around this trade: the grand former Bank of Joseon branch (1922), the old Customs House (1908), and the elegant Hirotsu House (1925), home of a Japanese merchant family.

Rather than erasing this past, Gunsan preserved it as a place of remembrance. The old bank is now the Modern Architecture Museum, and the harborside Modern History Museum explains the rice-export system frankly. Dongguksa, built in 1909, is the only surviving Japanese-style Buddhist temple in Korea. And in a gentle twist of history, Leesungdang — founded in 1945, the year of liberation — is Korea's oldest bakery, with lines out the door for its red-bean bread. Gunsan asks visitors not for anger, but for understanding.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. Express bus from Seoul Central City Terminal to Gunsan (~2.5h), or a Janghang-line train from Yongsan Station to Gunsan Station (~3h). The historic quarter is compact — most sites are within a 20-30 minute walk of the Modern History Museum, or rent a bike.

Tips. These are memorial sites of a painful era, not theme-park backdrops — read the museum panels first and keep photos respectful, especially at Dongguksa where a Peace Statue (Statue of a Girl) stands. Hirotsu House can sometimes only be viewed from outside; check before visiting. Go to Leesungdang early — the signature breads sell out.

Best time. Spring (late March-April) when Wolmyeong Park's cherry blossoms frame the old town, or autumn for comfortable walking weather.
