March 1st Movement: The 1919 Cry for Independence

Why does Korea shut down every March 1st? It remembers the day an occupied nation stood up — peacefully.

Every March 1st, Korea pauses for a national holiday called Samiljeol — literally "3-1 Day." It commemorates March 1, 1919, when Koreans across the peninsula rose in nonviolent protest against Japanese colonial rule, which had begun in 1910.

On that day, 33 religious leaders — Cheondoists, Christians, and Buddhists — signed a Declaration of Independence and read it at the Taehwagwan restaurant in Seoul, while a student read it publicly at the Palgakjeong pavilion in Tapgol Park. Crowds poured into the streets shouting "Manse!" ("Long live Korean independence!"). The movement spread nationwide: historians estimate around 1,500 to 1,800 demonstrations involving hundreds of thousands to as many as two million people. The colonial authorities responded with mass arrests, and many protesters — including the teenage student Yu Gwan-sun, who organized rallies in her hometown near Cheonan — died in prison.

The movement did not win independence, but it unified Korean identity and inspired the founding of the Provisional Government in exile. In 1949, the new Republic of Korea designated March 1 a national holiday.

Today you'll see the national flag, the Taegeukgi, hung on apartments and streets, and re-enactments of the Manse marches in Seoul and Cheonan. For visitors, it's a quiet but powerful window into why memory of the colonial era still matters deeply here.
