Mokpo: A Southern Port Remembered in Song and Open-Port History

A port that opened in 1897, mourned in Korea's most famous 1930s song — and today the ferry gateway to a sea of islands.

Mokpo sits at the far southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula, where the Yeongsan River meets a sea scattered with islands. For Koreans, the city's name instantly evokes a song: 'Tears of Mokpo' (1935), a mournful trot ballad sung by local star Lee Nan-young that became an anthem of sorrow during the colonial era.

The city's modern story began in October 1897, when Mokpo opened as an international trade port — one of the earliest in Korea. A Japanese consulate followed, and under colonial rule Mokpo grew into the gateway of the Honam region, shipping out rice and cotton. That history is still visible: the red-brick former Japanese Consulate (built 1900), the city's oldest building, now houses the Mokpo Modern History Museum.

Today Mokpo feels both nostalgic and lively. Yudalsan, the rocky peak above the old town, watches over streets of vintage shops and seafood restaurants — the city is one of Korea's great food towns, famous for hongeo (fermented skate), octopus, and mineo (croaker). Korea's longest marine cable car (3.23 km) glides from the north port over Yudalsan to Gohado island. And from the ferry terminal, boats leave for Hongdo, Heuksando, and even Jeju — which is why Koreans call Mokpo the gateway to the island sea.

If you go가신다면

Getting there. KTX from Yongsan Station (Seoul) direct to Mokpo Station in about 2.5 hours — the end of the Honam high-speed line. The old town and Yudalsan are walkable from the station; take a local bus or taxi to the cable car's north port terminal and the ferry terminal.

Tips. Try the local specialties bravely but know what you're ordering — hongeo (fermented ray) has a famously strong ammonia kick; start with grilled octopus or a seafood stew if unsure. If you plan an island trip to Hongdo/Heuksando, book ferries ahead and build in weather buffer days, as sailings cancel in rough seas. Ride the cable car near sunset for the best light over the archipelago.

Best time. April-June and September-October for mild weather and calmer seas; evening for the harbor lights and cable-car sunset.
