Namhae German Village: Built by Returning Miners and Nurses from Germany남해 독일마을: 파독 광부·간호사가 돌아와 세운 마을

On a hillside overlooking the sea on Namhae Island sits something unexpected: a village of white walls, orange roofs, and German beer gardens. It exists because of one of modern Korea's most poignant chapters. In the 1960s and 70s, when Korea was desperately poor, the government sent workers to West Germany — from 1963, roughly 8,000 men to work in coal mines, followed by more than 10,000 women as nurses, about 20,000 people in all by the late 1970s. The work was hard and often dangerous, and the wages they sent home became a precious source of foreign currency for a country rebuilding from war. Koreans call them the 'padok' generation — 'dispatched to Germany.' Decades later, in 2001, Namhae County began building this village to invite them home for retirement, offering subsidized land to those who had spent much of their lives in Germany. Many came back — some with German spouses — and built houses in the style of the country where they had grown old. Today you can walk the village's sloping lanes, visit the German Exhibition Hall that documents the workers' story, drink German beer at the annual October festival, and look down on Mulgeon's crescent-shaped fishing village below. It is a theme village with real history in its walls.
